Scottish Baking Awards 2020

Bute Island Foods has announced that it is to be a sponsor of the Scottish Baking Awards 2020.   The awards, now entering their 10th year, aim to recognise the outstanding baking that exists in Scotland, and acts as an excellent online guide for tourists and local people alike to the very best establishments that produce quality baking.   Prior to the awards, there was no awarding body for Artisan Bakers and Patisseries in Scotland, and so these awards celebrate the wide range of quality Masterbakers that exist throughout the country.

The much loved awards are returning on September 5th 2020 with a brand new format, hosted at the luxurious Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort.    There will be nine different categories for competitors, of course including a vegan section - hopefully some of our Sheese products will be used by the bakers in this category!

The categories are:

  • Bread
  • Sugarcraft
  • Sugar Artistry/Novelty
  • Chocolate
  • Speciality Baking (Sugar free, Gluten free, Dairy free)
  • Homebaking
  • Patisserie
  • Vegan
  • Junior Category Ages 8-16 (Open category from any of the above 8 category choices)
And, of course, like all high-profile cooking competitions, there will be a host of celebrity judges, including BBC Masterchef   Professionals Theodore Chana and Gary Maclean.

Founder and director of the Scottish Baking Awards, Melanie Andrews, is a celebrated professional chef and masterbaker, with several restaurants and tea rooms around Scotland.   She is delighted how successful the Awards have become, given their humble beginnings.   "In 2009, whilst on a driving holiday in Scotland, I found a distinct lack of information for restaurants, tearooms, coffee shops etc that supplied real home baking," Melanie explained.   "Being an absolute confirmed sugarholic and an avid eater of all things homemade, I devised a plan, on the back of my car manual in the glove compartment."

"I reckoned I had a little bit of knowledge in the catering industry, having four of my own restaurants and two thriving companies, so I set about devising a way to market, advertise, regulate and assess all the eating establishments in Scotland that provided great home baking."

And so the Scottish Baking Awards flourished, from these humble beginnings.   The winners can look forward to not only a cash award and a gold, silver or bronze medal, they also receive certificates and stickers to display in their establishment, and free extensive coverage in the press.

If you would like to enter your establishment in the competition, you can do so here.   Entries must be in by 31st July 2020.
